Having A Big Sale

(summarized from All About ROI, April 2010)

Promoting your products and services are an integral part of marketing strategy. They work well to motivate buyers into action, but they don't make you stand out from the pack. You need to amaze and delight your customers now and again to cement their loyalty and keep them opening and reading your emails. Here are some easy ideas:

  1. Don't just announce a sale. Offer coupons. A recent study showed that in many cases, coupon-based marketing campaigns had significantly higher clickthrough rates leading to increase in revenue per email.
    • Example: $10 off a $50 purchase
    • Include a time limit for redemption.
    • If you own a brick-n-mortar store, allow the coupon to be used online and in the store.

  2. Involve your readers. This helps to build community by engaging your audience. It can be as simple as a single question poll or a request to rate and review purchases, or solicit reader tips, or 'Ask the Expert'. (Editor's note: See article on 'What Your Customers Think'. Similar tools are available for surveys, polls).

  3. Take advantage of holidays and events. Everyone has ad campaigns during the major holidays, but there are many other opportunities that can help separate you from the pack. Take time to review the possibilities and make sure they make sense for your business and would relate well with your readers. Examples include adjusting the clock for daylight savings, or Grandparents' Day.

  4. Make your promotions fun! Sometimes a tongue-in-cheek campaign can connect with your readers. For example, "The owner has left on vacation. It's time for a sale before he/she gets back!". Add pizzazz to your promotions. Get creative and leverage your subject lines to capture interest.
